“Arching around the shoulders of the river, Tumbulgum is where the Tweed and Rous Rivers intersect, and is said to take its name from a local indigenous word for ‘meeting of the waters’.
Tumbulgum has a tucked-away, timeless ambience, set back quietly from the main road and opening up to surprise first-time visitors with its picturesque setting. Jump onboard a cruise to really take in the grandeur and beauty of the river system, spot myriad birdlife and see Wollumbin from a new vantage point. For the more active, hire a SUP or kayak to navigate these ancient waters.
Visitors to Tumbulgum can take things at their own pace, with a simple picnic and spot of fishing or a gin and rum distillery tour at the stunning Husk Distillers, home to the famous and tasty Ink Gin, creating a holiday vibe that’s just perfect for the moment. ”

The historic Tumbulgum Tavern, established in 1887, is a hot destination for locals and day trippers. The pub has a true country feel, and long summer lunches are easily enjoyed overlooking the river. Just down the road is House of Gabriel which offers beautiful meals and high teas.
A quick 10 minute drive up the river brings you to Murwillumbah, which is quickly emerging as a town that has been discovered. The “sleepiness” of the past has been replaced with new eateries and a buzzing art scene, showcasing the M Arts Precinct. Some of our favourite spots to enjoy include Keith (coffee), Bistro Livi (Spanish inspired), Tweed River House (hatted and on the river).
We love showing our visitors what the Tweed has to offer. The Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre is one of Australias leading regional art galleries! A visit to the gallery is always impressive, Diverse, quality art exhibitions in a spectacular rural setting with a great cafe too.
Just a quick 10-12 minutes to Cabarita Beach’s pristine headland, the location offers “country acreage atmosphere” within a quick drive to beaches and cafes. Kingscliff is similarly just a short drive along the Tweed River, which provides access to dining, shopping and general retail spaces (along with the soon to be completed new Tweed Hospital).
Nearby Cabarita Beach is a small seaside town located approximately 15km south of the Gold Coast in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. Cabarita is approximately 1 square Australia’s in size and is home to 3000 residents. The village is set in a scenic area with high environmental value due to the protected wetlands and world-class surfing beaches surrounding Norries Headland. Limited development has enabled this small coastal village to maintain charm and flourish into one of the most highly sought after areas on the Tweed Coast!
Other tourist attractions include scuba trips to Cook Island, whale-watching tours, deep sea fishing charters and learn to surf schools. The annual Greenback Fishing competition is well known and attended.
Gold Coast is a 15-minute drive heading north, or 30 minutes south takes you to Byron Bay. Mt Warning is approximately 30 minutes west with the famous climb. Some other great daytrips include a drive to Harvest Cafe in Newrybar, a visit to the FARM in Byron Bay or a drive to some of the amazing waterfalls along our coastal hinterland.
